Name of the Artist : Bill Gaskins
Dates Of Artist's Life : Born 1953
Personal Background : Bill Gaskins is an African American artist that
Style : His work is very powerful especially in the African American community its like he's giving us a voice without us speaking . African American's hair is a way for them to express their self's. Because it comes in many different shapes , curls , and styles. So I would compare his work to Amy Sherlands painting , " The make Believer " ( Monet's Garden )
Philosophy : His work explores the intersection of the black hair and the critical analysis f the details the 21st century. Socially it tackles the role of hair styling and the representing of African American culture and the " transcultural " role f hair.
Influences : Bill Gaskins made me step back and take a second look at hair , most have it but some don't but hair isn't just hair. Its put in categories as " good or bad hair " usually women or men with good hair have a better chance at doing things. I already knew this throughout out my life. But his images and they way he speaks about his art and the way he speaks in general really touched me as a PERSON & PHOTOGRAPHER !
Compare & Contrast : When I took my images I wanted to be inspired by Gaskins images rather than trying to make my images look just like his. I wanted to use all the materials I learned this trimester and apply them to my images that I took. I chose to use Gaskins " Good and Bad Hair" because it has it's own uniqueness that Gaskin and I try and create.
Personal Artist Statement: Image 1 - The first image shows jumbo sized kinky twist and its kind of like leading lines. I use to get kinky twist when I was a child , they use to take hours to get them done. But it was worth it.
Image 2 - This image shows a dominate African American woman with a strong message. To me this image is saying that she has PRIDE with being who she is and in her natural form rather than trying to hide it so he can fit in society standards or guidelines.
Image 3 - This hair style is inspired by bantu 360 waves ."Zulu tribes in Southern Africa .They're styled by using a certain brush and brushing it 4 ways all around your head. If you continue the process it will create 360 waves.
